The Illinois Science and Technology Institute (ISTI), a 501(c)(3) organization established by the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition in 2011, works to create partnerships between the private sector, research universities and the State of Illinois. Through targeted initiatives, ISTI develops and sustains relationships with partner organizations for grant support and programming that provides funds and opportunities to advance scientific understanding and technological innovation in Illinois.
ISTI will address STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) talent pipeline needs in Illinois by providing high quality student-driven research and development resources and experiences through the R&D STEM Learning Exchange, which connects students, teachers, families, universities/colleges and federal laboratories, those in the non-profit and entrepreneurial communities, and employers. ISTI provides technical and logistical support, attracts additional resources through grant writing, and provides targeted grant support to fill identified learning gaps in the State.
The mission of the Illinois Science & Technology Institute (ISTI) is to advance scientific understanding and technological innovation in Illinois through discovery, education, invention and partnership.
Illinois will have 320,000 job openings in STEM fields by 2018, but not enough students are graduating in STEM fields to meet demand. Illinois also has $12.5 billion in research and development (R&D) investment through businesses, universities and federal laboratories. This presents an opportunity to take action by working across sectors to address this talent gap. Read more about the importance of STEM education and opportunities below!
